About Reflexology
In 1913 Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American surgeon, introduced this therapy to the West. He noted that pressure on specific areas of the body could have an anaesthetizing effect on a related area. Developing this theory, he divided the body into ten equal and vertical zones which ended in the fingers and the toes. Thus there is a direct link between a specific reflex zone on the foot and hand which relates to corresponding areas and organs of the body within that zone.
In the 1930s Eunice Ingham, a nurse and therapist, further developed and refined the zonal theory into what is now known as foot reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot, mirrored congestion or tension in a related part of the body. Thus treating the whole foot can have a relaxing and healing effect on the whole body.
Every body has the ability to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, the body is in a state of “imbalance”. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium. For each patient the application of the therapy is unique. Sensitive, trained hands can detect tiny deposits and tensions in the feet which block vital energy pathways, resulting in illness. By releasing these tiny obstructions toxins are eliminated and the circulation improved, restoring the free flow of energy and nutrients to the body’s cells.
While your feet are being worked with there may be some discomfort, but it is fleeting and is a result of illness or damage to a part of the body. After the first treatment or two your body may respond in a very definite way: you may have a feeling of well-being and relaxation, or you may feel lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this is transitory. It is important to tell your reflexologist how you have responded to treatment and it is advisable to drink extra water to facilitate the removal of toxins.
An increasing number of people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonizing the body.
Reflexology has been successful in relieving many acute and chronic conditions. A course of treatment varies in length as it depends on your body’s needs. Once your body is in tune it is wise to have a treatment every so often in order to maintain your energy and well-being.
